A firecracker of a play by Jeff Talbott is in previews at the Lucille Lortel Theatre. The two leads are well known from the telly...Jonathan Groff ("Glee") and Rutina Wesley ("True Blood")...but together they burn up the stage in what is bound to be a controversial piece. Danny, an unsuccessful young, white, gay playwright writes a brilliant script about a black family and sends it out under an assumed name, that of an imaginary African-American woman. When the play is accepted for production he has to hire someone to impersonate the "author".
Walter Bobbie ("Chicago") has directed the play at a frenzied pace which serves some scenes better than others but you could hear a pin drop during the heated arguments concerning racial and sexual prejudice.
There is also a marvellous performance from Will Rogers (!) as Danny's best mate and Eddie Kaye Thomas rounds out the cast as Danny's boyfriend.
