Broadway Voices

To our delight we discovered at the last minute that Two time Tony winner Christine Ebersole was giving an afternoon concert at 92Y so I grabbed third row centre seats for $15 each. As always she was immaculate and hilarious.

She was paired with violin prodigy Aaron Weinstein who is perfecting his Jack Benny/Woody Allen shtick between songs.
Then we had time to amble downtown past the high end stores of Madison Avenue. The windows at Barney's are featuring items based on the work of Roy Lichtenstein, such as dinner plates (actual size at bottom of window).

coffee cups
beach balls
and frisbees
then on to the Broadway theatre on W53rd where we saw Rodgers & Hammerstein's CINDERELLA with a new and very contemporary book by Douglas Carter Beane. I was a little undecided about all the teen Valley Girl-speak until TT pointed out, "It's a panto" and of course the Poms have been wreaking havoc with traditional fairy tales forever. TT thinks this is a cinch to come to Australia.
Laura Osnes and Santino Fontana were gorgeous as 'er and 'im.
The magnificent Victoria Clark was funny as the addled beggar woman who is revealed to be the fairy Godmother and she fills the cavernous theatre with her warm rich vocals. TT, still recovering from the Christine Ebersole experience, said "Today we've heard TWO brilliant Broadway voices!"
Harriet Harris was sensational as the wicked stepmother, the Ball scene was transportingly beautiful and everyone lives happily ever after!
