If you happen to be in NYC on the first Monday of any month you should head to the 92Y in Tribeca to see singer/songwriter David Yazbek with his band Warmest Regards and a surprise guest star! Yazbek is the two time Tony nominee who wrote the scores for the Broadway musicals THE FULL MONTY, DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS and WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN (soon to be produced in London). He has also recorded several albums of his own songs and I'm very fond of his work.
His band features Erik Della Penna and Dean Sharenow who comprise their own well established duo "Kill Henry Sugar"
The special guest for Yazbek's first offering was the ridiculously talented Adam Guettel, grandson of Richard Rodgers and son of Mary Rodgers and the composer/lyricist of THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA, MYTHS & HYMNS and FLOYD COLLINS. Guettel has known Yazbek since he was 20 when they played in a band together, and tonight they duetted on two of Yazbek's compositions. Future guests will include Patti LuPone, Norbert Leo Butz and "film and tv actors you didn't know could sing". Guess I'm just going to have to turn up every month so I don't miss out. Spotted in the audience...the current star of "Peter & the Starcatcher" Matt Saldivar, the brilliant star of "Boardwalk Empire" Michael Shannon and "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" alumni Greg Jbara. Hiiiiighly recommended!!
