I was surprised just before the show tonight with a lovely card announcing the presence of Mr. Robert Ray, the Artistic Director of The Joffrey Ballet School in New York. I immediately recognised the name as the Aussie fella who choreographed "The Sentimental Bloke" for the Australian Ballet and long before that danced in the chorus of "Charlie Girl" with Dame Anna Neagle. Turns out he saw (and adored) Mum in GYPSY back in '75, loved TT in NICHOLAS NICKLEBY and has been a fan of mine since TORCH SONG TRILOGY in '83 so of COURSE I had to meet him after the show for a drink!
Accompanied by the delightful Greg Nanamura (left), Robert and I discovered we have heaps of mutual friends (including our devoted blog follower Ross Skiffington) and we barely drew breath for the next two hours. And he adored DOLLY! which didn't hurt. So we parted swearing undying devotion and the promise of many chatty dinners to come.
Lovely Robert Ray. Please say hello from me next time you see him.
ReplyDeleteHe was such a great friend to dear Jeffrey Warren xx
Robert lives up the road from us here in Sassafras. We had dinner at his gorgeous residence just before he flew back to NYC. A top bloke!
ReplyDeleteAs indeed you are too and I wish to send you truly magical greetings for your birthday! Bravo and congratulations!
Love and magic always,
Ross
