The magnificent Keala Settle, who plays Shirley the barmaid in PRISCILLA, played Tracy Turnblad in the U.S. national tour of HAIRSPRAY opposite six-time Emmy winner Bruce Vilanch as Edna.(He's written every Oscar broadcast in living memory as well as special material for Bette Midler, Lily Tomlin, Helen Reddy...you name them, they've spoken his witticisms.) Mr. Vilanch came to our opening night in Toronto and wrote me the loveliest letter asking to meet next time he was in town, so this afternoon tt and I joined him and Keala for a nosh at the Four Seasons. Bruce is charming, funny, unaffected and has a filing cabinet mind which retains EVERYTHING, every name and date, and we only drew breath for one brief moment to gape at the dashing Christopher Plummer as he seated himself at a corner table. Bruce will be appearing at Feinstein's nightclub in NYC in January so, if we can afford the crippling cover charge, we'll be sure to catch his act. A lovely afternoon.
