We spent a wonderful arvo with Keala Settle from "Priscilla" She has been a bit wary of New York so we thought a Magical Mystery Tour might plonk a new pair of glasses on her nose. First we instructed her to arrive at St Peters Lutheran church on Lexington Ave.
where we met our guest, full of excited anticipation
Here's the interior of the church which you can see from street level
A bit of pre-show excitement; who are we here to see...???
And then the show...!
It was the fantastic Barbara Carroll with her brilliant bassist, Jay Leonart, both New York musical legends. They had us on another planet with Berlin,Gershwin, Rodgers and Hart, Dave Fishberg's stunning song," Do You Miss New York?" and a glorious almost classical version of Johnny Green's "Body and Soul". Miss Carroll is twenty years old. We all wept with delight.
Here's the room from the floor
In the subway station on the way to the next secret destination, two merrymakers insisted on making a statement
Next stop...the Museum of the City of New York .
The first exhibition was a tribute to Joel Grey with a selection of his "Streets of New York" photos as well as memorabilia from his illustrious career.
Here he is in "Roar of the Greasepaint" with Cyril Ritchard (he made a career of replacing Anthony Newley on Broadway before "Cabaret" elevated him to true star status.)
And as Littlechap in "Stop the World...."
The two glid down the stairwell
to the next exhibit .... a history of the Apollo Theatre.
We want to go and see a show there real soon!!
Look! Pearl Bailey's trunk, Dizzy Gillespie's chapeau and Miles Davis's horn
A Supremes dress
All that gawking led to a cab ride to Columbus Circle and scoffing at...
The sated pair insisted on endorsing the eatery to the passers by
Last stop: a Lincoln Centre exhibition of theatre poster artists Fraver and McMullan
We then left Miss Settle to immerse herself in art while Sheldon and I raced across town for his "live to air" interview on "LX/NY" at NBC Studios in Rockerfeller Center. We hope our dearest Keala will now look at NYC's glories anew!! Thanks for a wonderful day!
The Museum of the City of New York sounds a truly fascinating place! Your pics are wonderful, as always, TT. I especially like the shots of the Apollo displays. xx
