(tt) It was a weird day today. We worked bits in the morning and tried some new blocking of some scenes. After lunch a sizeable section of the MTC staff came into the rehearsal room and watched a run. It felt really awful to me. I was horribly nervous and rewrote Wilde a fair bit! Lots of stuff that had been received with hoots in rehearsal seemed to land like wet crumpets. But at one stage I peeped out of a hole at the back of the set and saw Kylie McCormack, the casting director, with a grin as wide as St Kilda Rd. Later she told me that everyone was thrilled with the run. So we have a show and a few more days to polish and relax.
At six o'clock there was a subscribers' briefing in the Sumner Theatre where the show will be performed and a little of the set was up. There were about 100 people there and Simon and the cast fielded questions about this production and the one that preceded it in 1984. The memories of the late greats Ruth Cracknell, Monica Maughan, Frank Thring and Gordon Chater were evoked and appreciated, no less by me.
Here is a taste of the Tony Tripp/ Aubrey Beardsley set unlit as yet but pretty impressive
