The fabulous Taylor Dayne came to the show on Sunday fresh from touring Australia and she's a doll. I finally had the chance to ask her about something that had haunted me for years. Many moons ago I heard the great composer Jule Styne say that he wanted to revive FUNNY GIRL on Broadway with the only woman he'd found who could play the role...Taylor Dayne. Ms. Dayne confirmed the story: she was working on the score with Styne and Billy Stritch, the choreographer was to be Susan Stroman and the Weisslers (!) were set to produce. Then Jule was on and off dialysis, his new musical THE RED SHOES was a disaster and finally he died, as did the project. I could see she was still regretful. As poor Lauren Ambrose must be now with the cancellation of the latest incarnation.
