The gorgeous art deco apartment building was completed in 1931 and marketed to celebrities as the "in" place to live. John Wayne, Howard Hughes and Frank Sinatra all occupied the penthouse at some point with other former residents including Paulette Goddard, Billie Burke, Zasu Pitts, Clark Gable,
Errol Flynn, Marilyn Monroe, Michael Caine, Quincy Jones, Zsa Zsa Gabor and Roger Moore.
By 1982, a plan to convert the building to condominiums failed, and construction was halted abruptly with residents still living there. The building had deteriorated and was described as "like something from a war-ravaged land." After a $25 million restoration the building reopened as a luxury hotel in 1988.
