BURLY-Q!

Saw an interesting reading this afternoon, a gay take on old time burlesque, a sort of revisionist SUGAR BABIES. Low comics, fan dancers, strippers, the old familiar sketches but performed by an all male cast.

Fred Barton was someone I worked with at the Sydney Cabaret Convention many years ago. He wrote material for this show and was one of the main comedians.
Jay Rogers was the "Top Banana"
with Tom Gamblin as the straight man (replacing an indisposed Michael West). They recreated many old burlesque faves...the Doctor Sketch, the Candy Butcher interrupting the pompous tenor (singing a very funny song called "Bring Me a Dwarf"), the "Meet me 'round the corner in a half an hour" routine only with sexy gals replaced by sexy guys.
Of whom Andrew Briedis was the sexiest.
Hernando Umana, Jake Warnecke and Will Taylor were all splendid as the sweet young things.
Some charming numbers including the lament of a young girl in a poodle skirt shocked to discover that "My Boyfriend's Bi" but delighted that her boyfriend's boyfriend has a girlfriend who fancies her. A very clever number for Siamese twins, one gay and one straight, called "I'm of Two Minds". And "I Loved the Cruise", a nostalgic ode to the  good old days of pre-Gay Liberation by a piano bar veteran whose young customers have never heard of Judy Garland but want to go on the Rosie O'Donnell Gay Cruises with their children because they are "imploring to be as boring as the straights".

This could have a life Off--Broadway. It's cleverer than NAKED BOYS SINGING.
