The Day Off

I can highly recommend the new movie directed by Alexander Payne and starring George Clooney. Wonderful locations around the Hawaiian Islands and a very touching story beautifully acted. Took me a moment to recognise Matthew Lillard from the SCOOBY-DOO and SCREAM movies playing a husband and father and it came as a shock to see Michael Ontkean as a glorified extra.
Then it was on to....
where some of our company were to sing our contribution to the CAROLS FOR A CURE album with Martha Wash of  "It's Raining Men" fame to launch the unveiling of Bloomies' Christmas window display at 5pm. It was supposed to be an outdoor event but it was raining cats and dogs instead of men so the whole thing was moved to the third floor amongst the ladies lingerie.
There was a lot of standing around while the very small crowd waited patiently and our cast was left hanging in full view.
Ten minutes after the advertised starting time the sound check began which meant we all stared at an empty stage while prerecorded music blared through the bras and panties.
which at least gave our kids Luke and Gaten something to dance to. Suddenly, at 5.25 an army of press photographers arrived and set up right at the front of the small stage blocking everyone's view completely.
At that point I decided moral support can only go so far so I took my leave and went outside to get a gander at the Bloomingdale's Christmas windows.
They seemed to be a medley of window displays past.
I couldn't discern a theme and by now I was wet as well as pissed off so I began a slow meander to my next destination taking in the Christmas decor of Fifth Avenue on the way.
These tree ornaments are Henri Bendel hat boxes. Tres chic.
The windows of the Plaza Hotel are bedecked.
Lady Liberty takes the hounds shopping on the Brooklyn Bridge
These aren't Christmassy but striking images in a jeweller's display window.
and, finally, in the window of a diner on 8th Avenue, the inspiration for the character of Miss Turnstiles in ON THE TOWN...
from such notions classics are born!
