Second Avenue & 10th St.

This church, St. Mark's in the Bowery, holds the remains of the first Governor of New Amsterdam, Peter Stuyvesant. The church sits on what was once the garden chapel of Stuyvesant's vast estate which used to stretch all the way from 10th St. up to 23rd St.
Across the road on Tenth St, there once stood the Second Avenue Deli which had a room dedicated to one of the great stars of Yiddish Theatre, Molly Picon. All that remains now are some plaques in the footpath remembering the glory days of Second Avenue.
Musical theatre afficianados might recognise the names of some of the Yiddish theatre stars who crossed over into Broadway musicals...

Mike Burstyn was a replacement for Jim Dale in BARNUM and starred in an Off-Broadway revival of THE ROTHSCHILDS.

Joseph Buloff created the role of Ali Hakim in OKLAHOMA!

Molly Picon starred in Jerry Herman's first Broadway success MILK & HONEY and also played HELLO, DOLLY! in summer stock.

Fyvush Finkle played Mr. Mushnik in LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS Off-Broadway.

Leo Fuchs played Herr Schultz (opposite movie star Signe Hasso) in the first National Company of CABARET in 1967.

Irving Jacobson was the original Sancho Panza in MAN OF LA MANCHA.

And Henrietta Jacobsen sang and danced "Go Visit Your Grandmother" in 70 GIRLS 70.
