(tt) To Birdland tonight for an evening of jazz standards by three superb vocalists.. Janis Seigel and Laurel Masse' from 'Manhattan Transfer' and Lauren Kinhan from 'New York Voices'
They whizzed through beautiful arrangements of Mercer, Basie and Porter and paid tribute to the Boswell Sisters (joined by the violin virtuoso, Aaron Weinstein), Phoebe Snow and Doris Day. My absolute faves were Miss Masse' doing 'I'm Old Fashioned' to bass accompaniment and Miss Seigel doing a gorgeous version of 'Begin the Beguine' to wonderfully atmospheric percussion from Matt Wilson who conjured up a soundscape from cicadas to a dance band with consummate ease.
