There was a feature article in today's local paper about all the shows coming to Honolulu in the near future: WICKED, FUNNY GIRL, 9 TO 5, LEGALLY BLONDE, SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, THE GOODBYE GIRL. However, the only stage show on offer during our stay here was a production by On The Spot Improv called JANE AUSTEN ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE written and directed by the company's artistic director Garrick Paikai. Apparently this is Garrick's first script after a 12-year hiatus and it's a good one. A really interesting play.
The space is a curtained off section in an Art Gallery in Chinatown with two rows of seats around three sides of the stage. As we took our seats we were menaced by silent shambling zombies wearing splendid make-up by senior company member Alissa Joy Lee.We caught the final performance and author/director Paikai gave an emotional thank you speech at the end, presenting each company member with a flower. There were obviously a couple of new gags thrown in during the show. At one point, a silly-ass Englishman was killed by a zombie and as he expired he cried, "Now I'll never see MAGIC MIKE".
