Katoomba

(tt)   Two hours later with popped ears from the climb up the mountains we arrived at the once very exclusive resort town of Katoomba. It was THE place in the early part of the last century to escape the city heat and rent a holiday home or stay at the luxury Carrington Hotel or other hostelries.
Here is the first sight you get of the top of the main drag

There are still a few art nouveau and deco touches to admire.

Here is the famous Carrington Hotel. It's had a makeover but they have kept the weird chimney which dampens the glamour somewhat.

More of Katoomba Street. This is one of two picture palaces now converted

The dream of owning a 'wretched little flat above a store' was shattered today. An agent told me you have to buy the whole building. But this is what I have dreamed of for so long.

We are now on a more residential part of the street.

 Even further with a hill to climb back

And here is the house we looked at.  It was damp! And it had a weird feeling about it. So back to the drawing board

Sheldon was taken by this novelty. Part mini golf course.

 And I like this!  But not for sale and at the bottom of that enormous hill!

 The windows above the shop doors are so beautiful. What is must have been in the thirties.

 Here is the second movie house..now a restaurant.

We are coming back on Monday to look around some more before turning our sights on an another region. Light candles please!
