Who needs Balmain?

(tt)  After yesterday's 6 hour storage adventure, which has a least one more session to go,  we went to Woolies in Balmain..the suburb that had been our haunt for over 20 years.  I looked about and realised that my heart is no longer there. The trendies have won.  Mosman conquers everything! So this morning we went for a walk to Ultimo for breakfast and though it too is a bastion of wealth and development it has a great atmosphere and not a crocodile skin handbag in sight.
More of Glebe first. This old warehouse is now apartments.

Wrought iron work in Sydney is known as 'Paddington Lace' after the suburb which used it extensively on nineteenth century terraces.
The domed edifice is a rarity. All backyards had them once. "Dunnies", Work it out.
A newie perfectly rested next to an oldie
We discovered this roof top cafe overlooking Wentworth Park

A view of the Anzac Bridge. The Kauri Foreshore Hotel is on the left

The Light rail to Leichhardt uses this viaduct

Everytime we get to Harris St Ultimo my heart both rises and sinks when I get to the Terminus Hotel. Rises because it is still there and sinks because I'm sure it is being allowed to rot for the bulldozers to finish off.

The Jacksons Landing development has a few nice surprises. These low rise terraces pay homage to the working people's cottages and warehouses they replaced

Another newie
Its neighbour
This winged awning hovers over a little kiosk cafe at the end of Harris
We ate at one of the cafes below the first high rise.
That's Balmain across the water
This  I have always called "The KFC bucket on a stick"
An installation. The bars rise and fall with the movement of the water
The P&O Pacific Something

Trendo cafes and boites where stevedores once tossed wool bales and crates

Here is the new face of the Casino where we did "The Producers" and Sheldon debuted in "Priscilla"

Very much more upmarket than the shopping mall it was

View of Sidders from the balcony
Sheldon bemoans the demise of this show
The next tenant of the Lyric
Sheldon does a welcome dance
Foyer shot.
One of the new eateries
Adriano Zumbo is the current King of Poison with his cakes and pastries. Here is the sugar answer to a sushi train

A much more modest cake shop. Sheldon was interviewed by Michael Reidel of the NY Post here while PRISCILLA was running in Sydney and actually found him quite charming.
Some buildings on Union Square which is a delight

Harris St again

On an old wool store on Bridge Rd
Great graff on a Glebe cottage wall
Sheldon brazenly staring into a home. I despair.
Up an old rise

Love that the owners of this home kept part of its history

A block away from home.
