Rain Pryor, a singer, actress and stand-up comic, is the daughter of an African American father (Comedian Richard Pryor) and a Jewish mother (a former go-go dancer) and she has brought the story of her family to the stage in a one woman show backed by a three-piece band.
Now in her early forties with a Bette Midler demeanor and a big belt singing voice, Pryor is charming and funny as she channels her strict mom ("Joan Crawford in the 'Hood"), two very different grandmothers and even Billie Holliday. Her brief portrait of her largely absent dad in the advanced stages of multiple sclerosis is most moving.
