More Aussies on Broadway

Today was another Broadway in Bryant Park with appearances from the casts of RENT, NEWSIES, CHICAGO and....REBECCA! So I briskly walked the 53 blocks in the 85 degree heat from the Upper West Side through Central Park and arrived in a soaking heap JUST in time to see Aussie diva Maree Johnston singing her final notes as Mrs. Danvers. Maree will be covering Karen Mason when the show opens in November.
She looked as gorgeous as ever as she graciously posed for fans after her segment. Maree appeared in my concert versions of FOLLIES and SHE LOVES ME in Australia and this will be her first gig on Broadway.
It's fortuitous that Maree will be on Broadway at the same time as Anthony Warlow in ANNIE. They played the Phantom and Christine together in the original Australian company.

  1. Hey Sheldon, loving all these NYC updates! More than a little excited about Rebecca so I hope it runs long enough for my annual jaunt but of course if it doesn't I'll have your fine reporting to rely on :-)). Thinking of you heaps and hope the heat is bearable xxxx

  2. I'm so thrilled to see Mr. Warlow on Broadway! I'll meet him when he comes in for measurements tomorrow; he seems like a nice man!

  3. "Rebecca" is excellent - I saw it in Vienna when it first opened there. Brilliant score and so very, very dark. The staging was impressive there, I hope they carry that to Broadway. I also hope the translation/re-writes are as good as the original lyrics. There are a lot of amazing shows on in Europe in the last decade that have never made it to London or Broadway ("Elisabeth", "3 Musketiers", "Tanz Der Vampire" - well, something made it to Broadway but "Dance of the Vampires" was nothing like the original) - I'm hoping "Rebecca" will help other musicals make it across the water too.

Jealous of you being in Manhattan - I was meant to be there next week after a conference in Maine but couldn't attend it in the end as other things got in the way. Hey, ho - always next summer!
