Love Never Dies Never Ends But Will

(tt)   Simon Phillips who is directing us in "Earnest" has directed the Melbourne version of  the latest Lloyd Webber opus. It is lavish and colourful and expertly sung by Ben Lewis, Anna O'Byrne, Maria Mercedes, Sharon Millerchip and Simon Gleeson et al.  Simon's staging is wonderful.  But not one laugh. Not one. I got a freebie!

The spec Regent..which is not a theatre..it's a cinema and always will be a cinema.

It defeated 'Man of La Mancha' and 'Sunset Boulevard' and now this behemoth.

Inside is o.t.t. too.

That's all I can say about it.

  1. It is the problem of one Lord Webber. It is too dark for audiences during a GFC. You cannot sing or dance your way out the aisles after clutching colourful plastic (empty) alcohol glasses. It is the difference between placing Rock of Ages in the Comedy and unexpectedly selling every seat with regular "house full" signs. The Regent is a massive venue and needs massive audiences to make a show work. Also when tickets were over $129 Aus (A-reserve) people think twice about their theatre choices (given dinner or supper, parking etc). This could be a mini-subscription to the MTC who also do regular small musicals, or even the whole subscription to the Production Company's staged musicals (which are usually joyous). No matter the talent, and the staging, if the very vehicle is wrong or lacking simply reducing tix prices to $69 sends the message that the show is bombing. It was having problems audience numbers-wise in August. Making this fabulous cast slog their guts out nighly to poor audience numbers is simply heartless and mercenary.
The format of the musical re protagonists, at curtain probably explains why Jeckyll and Hyde did not lift off in 2010.. and that show has more theatrical tension and musical virtuosity.
