The Best Man

A timely revival of Gore Vidal's political drama is currently in previews and showing signs of being a huge commercial hit. I can't remember the last time I saw a play where almost EVERY cast member is greeted with hugely enthusiastic entrance applause, and it is a pleasure to see James Earl Jones as the U.S. President owning the stage again as he did in DRIVING MISS DAISY last year. John Larroquette and Candice Bergen are wonderful as the former Secretary of State and his estranged wife caught in a battle to win a Presidential nomination against a slick and unscrupulous rival played by WILL & GRACE's Eric McCormack. The piece may be 52 years old but everything it says about religion, image and dirty tactics in politics is frighteningly relevant. And it has Angela Lansbury.

(tt)  The auditorium is decorated as a convention centre with bunting and flags.  Jingoistic music is playing and on televisions reporters deliver the latest developments. The ushers wear white boaters with r w and b ribbons.  I was naughty and sneaked a pic at one of the intervals
