It was originally performed over 35 years ago and some of that cast are recreating their roles.
In the !930's depression carnival troupes toured the poverty stricken mid west and south of the United States. Some attractions were strip joints and at certain performances the cast would allow acts of oral gratification to be performed on them. This was known as giving a "hot lunch".
As an act of desperation the leader of the troupe decides that advertising a religious show would get more people in so they concoct a piece which is half a filthy vaudeville and half a reverential celebration of the life and death of Christ. As the play unfolds the cast become deeply affected by the scriptures. Despite the appalling vulgarity we are assaulted with the experience is a very very touching and morally uplifting one.
It's far cleverer than Jesus Christ Superstar and heaps more fun!
