Miss Buckley Back on Broadway

(tt)   For one night only Miss Betty Buckley did a set in a room I have never visited before. B B Kings.

It's slap bang in the ghastly section of 42nd St between 7th  and 8th but it was worth every inch needed to dodge and weave the rubber neckers.

Now smokier voiced and slightly more basso, Miss Buckley created a great programme  mainly selected from "Ah Men, The Boys of Broadway" which sees Miss B singing songs from musicals usually performed by men.
She opened with "I Can See It"  from 'The Fantasticks' and then "I Won't Dance"

She let it be known that there would also be some material that by contract she can't do at places like Feinstein's...show toons only there!

She did a lovely string of  men songs from The King and I and South Pacific and then a stunning version of "On The Street Where You Live"

She adored working with Michael Rupert in Pippin and sang a  haunting William Finn song from "Elegies" that Mr Rupert had debuted..."Venice"

One of my favourites followed -  "The Way You Look Tonight"
One of the best numbers was one I had never heard.  "I Am A Town" by Mary Chapin Carpenter
(See MCC's version below)

Then Miss Buckley sang "Come Back To Me"' from 'On a Clear Day'. A joy
She went into  a lovely soft rock arrangement of "Hey There" which was goose bumpy and I thought of Lamond....of course!
Then followed three songs from "Sweeney Todd" ...Not While I'm Around"  .... and I thought of me!  "Johanna" and "My Friends"
Last night she was socialising with Charles Busch and he suggested they get a production up of "Sweeney" with her in the title role and he as Mrs L!!!!

She had three encores!  "Rivers Belong Where They Can Ramble"..another homage to Michael Rupert; "Your Own True Love"..which I had been listening to  this morning on Paul McCartney's great new album and finally "Home" from 'The Wiz'
It was an evening of great grace and warmth and heart. I was blessed to be there. Thanks, Sheldy!!Posted by Picasa
