Another fab concert at 92Y, this one put together put together by Rob Fisher, currently musical director of ANYTHING GOES and all productions worldwide of CHICAGO.
This was IN PERFECT HARMONY: CELEBRATING THE VOCAL GROUP and featured the talents of the DiGiallonardo Sisters and the New York Voices.
Twenty five years ago Genevieve Lemon, Max Lambert & I (Sheldy) wrote a pub show where we portrayed the Amazing Browns, a brother-and-sister act who only sang covers of other brother-and-sister acts. We spent weeks perfecting the vocal styles of the Righteous Brothers, the McGuire Sisters, the Cowsills, the Free Design (!!) and today I became quite nostalgic as Mr. Fisher and Co, in various combinations, traced the history of vocal groups from the Boswell Sisters to the Beach Boys to the Pointer Sisters, recreating their sounds beautifully. I was particularly taken with ABBA ("Take a Chance on Me"), Weather Report ("Birdland"), Laura Nyro ("Stoned Soul Picnic") The Martins ("Louisiana Purchase") The Beatles ("Because"/"Day Tripper") Lambert, Hendricks & Ross ("Cloudburst") and a sensational "Bohemian Rhapsody". The rather elderly audience seemed a bit out of their depth but bravo to Mr. Fisher for challenging their expectations.
